It became quite clear how important Rachel Berry was to the show as she was very much a unique character for a teen show. She was ambitious, strong willed and someone for the audience to root for. In short: the personification of the show itself.

So when did everything change? What was the Catalyst for the “dismal” show we have now?

My guess: Its popularity.
